Different Styles of Antique Chairs

Antique chairs often contain the key characteristics of styles or periods. The attention to detail and expert craftsmanship that is the hallmark of antique chairs makes them desirable. An antique chair is generally one that is at least 100 years old. As collecting antique chairs is popular, there are copies made of just about every antique chair style. If you have found antique chairs and don't know the style, there are some clues about which style they belong to.
l         Queen Anne Style
Examine the arms and legs of the chair for the nature of the curves. If the legs are curved, also known as cabriole legs, with a simple scallop-cut mount, it's likely a genuine antique chair in the Queen Anne style. This antique chair style came about in the early 18th century. Other markers of the Queen Anne style include being made of woods such as walnut, cherry or mahogany.

l         Regency Style
Compare the size and shape of the chair. If it's a smaller chair, in addition to a smaller scale, it may be the Regency style which started in the early 19th century. Chairs in the Regency style are almost always made up of mahogany. Another trademark of this antique chair style is bold curves.

l         Rococo Style
Look at the chair to see whether the arms are attached or detached. If there are detached arms, it could be the Rococo style. And it came out in the early 18th century. The chairs of Rococo design tend to have the detached, cushioned arms and a long, cushioned back. They are also made of mahogany.
l         Victorian Style
Feel the weight of the chair. If the chair is massive in size, as well as heavy, it may be the Victorian style which came about in the late 19th century. This antique chair style was usually made up of walnut, rosewood or mahogany and has a dark and shiny finish. There are usually very ornate carvings on the furniture pieces as well.

How To Choose Wood Furniture

Shopping for wood furniture? Selecting high-quality wood furniture can be baffling. There are many different styles, materials and construction techniques from which you can select. To make a good selection, obtain as much information as possible.

l        Material
See the scar, texture of the wood. Wood has some scars inevitably. If there are scars at one side, there must also have scars to the opposite side. Wood texture at one side must correspondingly have the wood texture inside.

l        Quality of Construction
Quality is mainly determined by two characteristics: method of joining parts of wood furniture. All joints are glued together. For quality , the joints should  be tight without any glue showing.
1.         Joints. How various parts of a piece furniture is put together are very important to durability and appearance.
2.         Sturdiness. Trying to determine sturdiness is very important when selecting wood furniture. This is because sturdiness is a good indicator of how long a piece will last.

l        Quality of finish
A quality finish involves three main steps: sanding, staining , and finishing. If any one of these steps is not done properly, the finish does not look as good as it should.
1.         Sanding. The manufacturer may do a good job of staining, finishing, and polishing, but if the beginning surface has any trace of roughness, not enough sanding, or sanding across properly absorb more stain. To check for adequate sanding, look at the finish from different angles with the light reflecting onto the wood surface. Is the finish blotchy or cloudy in some areas or does it may dark lines running across the grain? If the wood surface is blotchy, cloudy, or has dark lines running across the grain, the wood surface may not have been sanded smooth before staining.
2.         Staining. A good stain can enhance the natural beauty of wood, add color and character to wood, make one wood type. Look like another, and make different woods look similar. To evaluate the quality of staining, check the wood surface to see if the stain is evenly applied. There should be no dark spots where there is more stain in one area than another.
3.         Finishing. Finishes range from high-gloss to low-gloss in varying qualities. A high-quality finish is satiny smooth and free of rough spots, dust specks, or bubbles. A good way to check the smoothness of a finish is to put a nylon over your hand and run it over the finish. If the nylon catches or snags, it has not been sanded or finished properly.

What Is Neoclassical Furniture

Neoclassical Furniture is a style of furniture that gained popularity in the mid-1700s and into the 1800s. Many countries followed the neoclassical design during that time period, each one giving the style a different name. As a result, in England neoclassical furniture is referred to as Late Georgian, in France it is called Louis XVI style, and in the United States it is called the Federal or Empire style. It is also called Grecian or Etruscan style in some places.

In France, one of the major proponents of neoclassicism could be found in the Louis XVI style. Here, we see a major turning away from the curves of the Rococo style that had previously dominated. Each piece emphasized straight lines, sharp right angles and a seriousness and logical approach characteristic of Neoclassicism in general. Louis XVI furniture distinguished itself by aping the Etruscan style. This involved a complex mixing of sculptural ornamentation with mounts made out of metal and ceramic.

Empire Style Furniture
The Empire Style is commonly referred to as the second phase of neoclassical furniture design. It was based largely on styles seen in the Roman Empire. The style was even more sober than the earlier 18th century neoclassical designs that preceded it. A high level of craftsmanship could be seen in such details as gilded bronze mounts and embellishments. In addition to its European precedents, the Empire style was also heavily influenced by a contemporaneous design style in the United States known as the Federal Style.

Characters of Neoclassical Furniture
In neoclassical furniture, form is ultimately the most important factor. The furniture should be considered orderly, with more tidy lines and fewer swirls and curves. There is still plenty of ornate detail, as was common in previous furniture styles, however. The detail in neoclassical furniture comes from delicate painting and precise carving. In addition, wood can be inlaid with other pieces of wood, gold foil, or other materials.

Advantages of Wooden Furniture

Throughout history, furniture has traditionally always been made of wood. until the industrial revolution when such materials as steel, glass, and plastic have appeared. Glass items came a bit later – but they are real artworks. However, wooden furniture is and has always been the most popular. Why? I think you should know something about its main advantages:
Ease of maintenance.
Wood furniture is easy to maintain. Simply clean the surface of the different set pieces on a regular basis. Don't let dust, water or oil settle on the chairs, tables, and cabinets for long periods of time. If you can keep the set pieces clean, you get to enjoy the home pieces for many years to come.
Strength and durability
Wood furniture is extremely resilient and requires very little maintenance. Wood is a long-lasting natural material that can stand constant abuse, whether it's spills in the kitchen or scratches in the dining room. Solid wood furniture can last for generations with minimum care.
